About me

Mateusz Skutnik
I’m an architect. I graduated from the Department of Architecture at the Technical University in Gdansk, Poland. Lately I went back to calling myself an architect, but in a completely different meaning than you could think of. I’m a flash games architect, I design gameplay, structure, I write action script codes to make games work, and finally I design all the graphics I use in my games. My best known game so far is Submachine. Since 2005 this game became an internet phenomenon, gaining each year more devoted fans than anything I created before in my entire life. I’m constantly working on new episodes of this game series, but I also created another family of games, the Squirrel Family. Those are games targeted to younger audience, the design is bright sunny, happy, and cute. Gameplay usually consists of a simple story shown on one game screen. But there are also longer platform games.
I am also a graphic novel artist, and that is my main interest in my creative career, I’ve been drawing comics for 21 years now. OMG that’s a long time… Finding time between dayjob and creating flash games after hours I still find joy and satisfaction in comiclike storytelling. Telling the story – that’s the main thing I want to do in my life. Whether through comics, or flash games – doesn’t matter. I’ve got lot’s of stories in my head, and I’ll keep serving them to whoever wants to listen to them. I usually write stories by myself, my main comic series is Rewolucje, however from time to time I get impressed by other people’s scripts. Not a lot of them: Nikodem Skrodzki, with whom I created the Morfolaki comic series, Karol Konwerski (Blaki and Pan Blaki), Domink Szczesniak (Czaki) and last but not least – prof Jerzy Szylak, together we created Alicja and Wyznania wlasciciela kantoru, and there will be more episodes of Rewolucje comic series by the two of us.
I tend to expand my storytelling to new territories. I create movies, animation, games, comic books… I also created a watercolour set-design based on Frida Kahlo’s works to the show “Viva La Vida” at the Occasional Theatre in Sopot.

I’d like to be you.
Just that simple (!?).
But I’ll never be you – life isn’t that fair… I’m just a silly weird girl who failed trying to go somewhere. I’ve tried to go somewhere, but I was walking in circles the entire time. I usually don’t know what to do with my spare time and I spend it like rubbish. Anyway… I’m just a plain girl with plain ideas (like most of us). Thank you for being someone very different of me.

Goodbye.
Much we love your game and I want to be the continuation of submachine.
But what would you recommend my editor adventure I still tyro.

Hey! I played all the submachines (including 0 and FLF) (and i collected all the secret items :) and i loved them.
I did this just in 2 days. And i like your ideas about storytelling and self improvment.
First submachine was like a small, pure game with some nice ideas. I think, second is the first hardcore one. Both puzzles and ideas. But i adore third one. It was like a big surprize. It was so short but really different from than others.
By the way, my favourite is the 4th. (like most of the people i guess.) It has the most brilliant idea of all, all different places and portals. It was like 5 different game in 1. And best graphics in my humble opinion :)
But after 4th one, i thought you couldn’t improve the game. But you didn’t run out of ideas (like you said in the secret room :) All that “old teleport” puzzle thing was great.
I am really looking forward to play 6th.
Once again, i love your works. I will write another comment when you realese the 6th!
Take care.
Greetings from Turkey.
p.s.: 0 was not bad. But i like FLF, but there are some missing parts i still don’t get.

Bedzie skierowany do dzieciaków p przedziale wiekowym 8-16 lat. Taka mieszanina Dyscowery, National Geographic, Swiata młodych, z domieszką problematyki społecznej i kulturalnej. Pozdrawiam serdecznie i życzę wszystkeigo najlepszego.. Mariusz Skowronski

Dear Mateusz,
I have been a big fan of your works. However, until today, I did not know you are an architect. I am also an architect in another strange way: I am an organizational and institutional designer though I graduated from Dept of Architecture, Waseda Univ in Tokyo and have the first-class professional certificate. I always enjoy your works. So please make us happy by your creative ideas.

Hey i just love your games, my son (5yo) adores them. Wondering if you’ve had time to work on the 3rd (or is it 4th) Covert Front… Or another Daymare Town. In meantime, we are keeping busy w/ your other Pastel games. Thanks so much for putting together such neat games, the graphics are amazing (love the daymare graphics ;) and for using that great brain of yours for the good of the game community.

Hi, i’ve just added myself to the forum though i’m an old submachine addict!!! Lookin’ forward for Sub6,while i’m trying to decipher Covert Front3. Love your work Mateusz, ’cause it’s not repetitive and it’s extremely detailed…
I saw the many comments u get from different parts of the world and i can’t just think that Internet is evil, it joins people in a way that wouldn’t be possible otherwise, thanx to your job too ’cause it’s the reason why we’re all here, connectin’ with each other with a common taste (addiction in my case!haha)… Greetings from Argentina

Love your games, Mateusz! Your creativity amazes me. Like the Submachine games, but am enthralled with the various inhabitants in daymare town! Just who is that mysterious and elusive (and fast!) little being? And the testy librarian cracks me up…more of him, please! Keep up the good work!

I knew it!!! Your masterpieces games should be an architect mind product. Oh, by the way I am an architect too… and very glad, very proud to know that my favourite game author/artist of all times has something in common to me! Your work is so perfect – vitruvian triad for games – I wish someday I would achieve such quality level in my work as you did. And believe me, I do understand when you take one year or more to bring us some fun, because I do know that a great project takes time. I’m cool to wait so long because it’s so worthy. Congratulations!
I hope you all the best!

love your ideas, all your point-and click games are my favourites.
I like the way you put the ‘historical’ background and elements in the games, and also the secret clues, the hidden message.. It is so different from other games of similar type, it seems to have a reason behind the game, making it so mysterious and enchanting.. Simply the best for me.
I also notice your grahics from this site, they are beautiful and engaging! Wonder if i could find them in my place? I am from Hong Kong.
Wish you all the best;)

Hello!
I first came into contact with the wonderous world of Pastel Games a few years ago as I discovered the submachine series. They’re my favourite games, but I also love Daymare town, fog fall and all the escape games :)
I really appreciate your (and your colleagues’) work and I hope you will continue making amazing games for a very long time. I saw that you’re starting up an iPhone business too, so I hurried to buy Submachine on my 3GS (even though I already played it sooo many times).
You’re my greatest role model and inspiration. Please continue to tell us your stories.
